Columbus is largest city in the Midwest without downtown Bike Lanes!

In response to a Columbus Underground post "Report Says Columbus is Second Largest City with no Downtown Bike Lanes" the author of the post below took painstaking effort to clarify that Columbus is actually the 4 or 5th largest city without bike lanes.  He does have some good points in the post and touches on Connect the Core.  

It's just that his title puzzles me, is he questioning the journalist integrity of Columbus Underground or Consider Biking?  I guess either way the next step is to take it up with our respective editorial review boards.

I often try to give the impression that I don't care about stuff, but honestly, I care a lot. I care that a reader can feel assured that he/she can state facts found on this blog and be able to quote this blog without making an ass of his/herself. Sure I

I will summarize my beef so that readers who are uninterested in bicycle gossip can live their lives. A press statement (discussed below) had some inaccuracies whilst reporting on the state of bicycling in Columbus. With that said, Columbus could be a lot more bike friendly which includes increasing bicycling infrastructure.

Recently, Consider Biking has been working on "Connect the Core" which aims to add bicycle lanes or bicycle tracks downtown. Within their summary, the cost for 12+ miles of bike lanes would cost ~$140,000, this is less than what we've been spending on the bike shelters. Although I'm iffy on bike lanes, that's a relatively good price and sometimes a city should just dive in.

What Columbus Needs - Input Encouraged

The hot topic is ... What does Columbus need to be a better city?  

If you want to hear it discussed, come to the Columbus Metropolitan Club on November 9.   I invite you to read the Columbus Monthly article and post your own list to Columbus Underground.

14. Paint and/or light the railroad bridge near North Bank. (it's ugly)

16. Passenger Rail from Amlin (Dublin) to Downtown Columbus

Doug Morgan hears it from his friends all the time. They call him a "green freak," a car-hater. Far from it, he says.

When the Wall Street lawyer and Ohio native moved back to Clintonville with his family in 1987, purposely enrolling his kids in Columbus Public Schools to "support the urban center," he still drove everywhere he needed to go for years.

This reliance on his car didn't cause a sudden attack of conscience so much as a profound realization.

"It was the realization of how disconnected I had become from my community," he said. "It was disconcerting. I wasn't truly seeing my community - and I don't think anyone can through a windshield."

Many like Morgan are components of an extensive grassroots network of active citizens that have helped convince the City of Columbus that, if we are to take a bold step forward, we must begin by turning to the past.

Obesity, high gas prices, job loss, the economy, the environment - all these 21st century problems that plague Columbus, our state, and our country might be alleviated by embracing the use of a 19th century invention:

The good old bicycle.

Bike Friendly Columbus - a Tipping Point

Long-time bicycle advocates who started the predecessor to  Consider Biking probably feel like they've been on a 20 year climb with lots of roadblocks.   However, as a relative newcomer to the cause, my impression is that we are on the edge of a major tipping point toward bike friendliness in the city of Columbus.

Here's a few recent developments and more that are expected soon:

• Columbus Downtown Development Corp has worked with MSI Design Planning on12 ideas for improving downtown Columbus and the downtown Bike Center is on the fast track.  A Downtown Bicycle Station to include bike storage, bike rentals, showers for commuters

• Last month, Franklin County Metro Parks took over maintenance of trails in and along Columbus city parks and county land.  Dispatch Article, 7/9/10

• Scioto Mile (pictured) opening June 2011 will connect North Bank Park to the Scioto Audubon Metro Park on the Whittier Penninsula.  Business First, 8/6/10

• The city of Columbus is planning a renovation of the former Division of Police headquarters.  The building has retail spaces that the city may renovate into shower rooms for city workers who ride bicycles to work and other employee amenities. Business First, 8/6/10

 

It's certainly an exciting time for Central Ohio Bicyclists!
